When Should You Book Your Newborn Photography Session? A Guide for Expecting Parents

Preparing for a new baby comes with a seemingly endless list of things to organise. There are appointments to remember, tiny clothes to buy, a nursery to prepare, and names to consider.

Somewhere amongst all of that planning, you may also be thinking about newborn photography.

One of the most common questions expecting parents ask me is, “When should I book my newborn photography session?”

The simple answer is that it’s best to book while you’re still pregnant.

Your baby’s actual arrival date may be unpredictable, but reserving your session during pregnancy gives you one less thing to organise once your little one arrives. It also gives us plenty of time to talk about your session and create a relaxed plan before life becomes wonderfully busy with your newest family member.

When Is the Best Time to Book a Newborn Photographer?

Ideally, I recommend getting in touch during your second trimester or early in your third trimester.

You don’t need to know exactly when your baby will arrive. Your estimated due date is enough to begin planning.

Booking ahead simply means I can reserve space around your due date. Once your baby arrives, we can confirm the details based on their actual birth date and how you and your baby are feeling.

Newborn photographers can often take only a limited number of bookings each month because babies rarely arrive exactly when expected. Booking early gives you the best opportunity to secure your preferred photographer without having to search for availability during those precious first days at home.

When Should Newborn Photos Be Taken?

Many traditional newborn photography sessions take place within the first few weeks after birth.

During this stage, babies are often sleepier and naturally curl into the beautiful positions that remind us just how tiny they were when they first arrived.

But every baby is different.

Some babies arrive earlier than expected. Others need additional time at home before their parents feel ready for a photography session. Sometimes recovery takes longer than anticipated, and sometimes families simply need a little more time to settle into their new routine.

That’s completely fine.

There is no single day that determines whether beautiful newborn photographs can be created. The most important thing is that you and your baby feel comfortable and ready.

What Happens If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

This is another question I hear often, and the answer is simple. We adjust.

Your due date gives us a starting point, not a fixed photography date.

Babies have their own schedules, and newborn photography needs to be flexible enough to accommodate that.

If your baby arrives earlier or later than expected, we simply arrange your session accordingly. This flexibility is one of the reasons I recommend booking before your baby arrives rather than waiting until after the birth.

It allows us to plan without putting unnecessary pressure on you during those first few weeks.

Is It Too Late If My Baby Has Already Arrived?

Not necessarily.

If your baby has already arrived and you haven’t booked a newborn session, it’s still worth getting in touch.

Depending on availability, I may be able to accommodate your family. Even if your baby is slightly older than the traditional newborn stage, we can still create beautiful photographs that capture their tiny features, expressions, and connection with you.

Babies change incredibly quickly during their first year, and every stage has something special worth remembering.

The most important thing is not to decide that you’ve “missed your chance” without asking.

Why Booking During Pregnancy Makes Everything Easier

The first weeks with a newborn can feel like a beautiful blur.

Your days suddenly revolve around feeding, settling, cuddling, changing nappies, and getting to know this tiny new person who has completely changed your world.

Finding and booking a photographer may understandably fall to the bottom of your list.

Booking your newborn photography session during pregnancy removes that pressure.

You already know who your photographer is. You know your booking is secured. You have time to ask questions and understand what to expect.

Then, once your baby arrives, you can simply let me know the wonderful news and we can organise the final details.

Should You Book Maternity and Newborn Photography Together?

If you’re considering both maternity and newborn photography, booking the two sessions together can be a beautiful way to document your journey into parenthood.

Your maternity photographs capture the anticipation, excitement, and connection you feel while waiting to meet your baby.

Your newborn photographs then tell the next part of the story.

Together, they preserve two completely different but closely connected chapters in your family’s life.

Pregnancy can sometimes feel long while you’re living through it, but once your baby arrives, that beautiful bump can suddenly feel like a distant memory. Having both stages professionally photographed allows you to look back on the entire journey.

What Should I Expect From a Newborn Photography Session?

Newborn photography should never feel rushed.

Babies need time to feed, settle, cuddle, and simply be babies. A good newborn session allows plenty of time for all of those things.

If your little one needs a break, we take a break.

If they need feeding, we stop for a feed.

If they simply need to be held by Mum or Dad for a while, those moments can often become some of the most meaningful photographs from the entire session.

My approach to photography is centred around creating beautiful images while making the experience comfortable and enjoyable for your family. You can learn more about me and my approach to photography before deciding whether I’m the right photographer for your family.

Don’t Forget the Tiny Details

One of the reasons newborn photography is so special is how quickly everything changes.

Those tiny fingers won’t stay tiny.

The little wrinkles on their feet begin to disappear.

Their sleepy expressions change.

Their personality starts to emerge.

Before you know it, the newborn you once held in your arms is smiling, sitting, crawling, walking, and becoming their own little person.

When you’re living through the newborn stage, it can feel like you’ll remember every detail forever.

But life moves quickly.

Photographs give you a way to return to those moments years later and remember just how small they really were.

Newborn Photography Is About Your Family Too

While your new baby may be the focus of the session, newborn photography is also about capturing the beginning of a new chapter for your whole family.

It’s about the way you look at your baby.

The way they fit into your arms.

The connection between siblings meeting their newest family member.

The quiet moments between parents who are navigating this incredible new stage together.

These photographs become part of your family’s history.

Years from now, your child will be able to look back and see just how deeply they were loved from the very beginning.

When Should You Start Looking for a Newborn Photographer?

If you know that newborn photography is important to you, start looking during pregnancy.

Take some time to find a photographer whose work genuinely connects with you.

Look beyond individual photographs and consider the overall style. Do the images feel natural? Timeless? Emotional? Can you imagine those photographs displayed in your home years from now?

It’s also important to choose someone whose approach makes you feel comfortable.

Your newborn photography experience should feel calm, personal, and enjoyable. You should be able to focus on your baby while trusting that your photographer is carefully preserving this special time for you.

So, When Should You Book Your Newborn Photography Session?

The best time to book is during your pregnancy, ideally in your second trimester or early third trimester.

This gives you the best chance of securing availability while allowing plenty of flexibility around your baby’s actual arrival.

However, if your baby is already here, don’t worry. It’s always worth reaching out to see what’s possible.

There is no perfect moment to become a parent, and babies certainly don’t follow calendars. Your photography session should work around your family, not the other way around.

What matters most is preserving this beautiful chapter before it changes.

Because it will change.

Much faster than you think.
